Biography of Joan Manguiat

I am a registered early childhood educator and have been working with young children since 2008. I was born in the Philippines and raised in Hong Kong, where I studied both Early Childhood Education and Performing Arts (Musical Theatre). Growing up, I have always loved two things - being around young children and dancing on stage. This passion then led me to my first venture into early childhood education in 2008 as a creative arts educator, primarily focused on ballet and tap dance foundations. From then on, my journey as an early years educator continued, when I was given the opportunity to teach baby gym, arts and crafts, story, and music classes. Here I discovered the power of music to captivate young learners. I have taught at international kindergartens and most recently at a preschool where I helped develop and solidify their playgroup curriculum.

My own teaching philosophy is that young children learn best when they are moving and exploring in a nurturing and creative environment. I believe that music is a form of effective communication, when combined with respectful social connections and meaningful family involvement, these provide the essential building blocks for a child’s successful learning.

When I am not in the classroom, I love spending quality time with my family and my son. I believe there is no greater journey than being a parent. Watching your own child accomplish milestones and grow into a happy, confident, and caring individual is truly rewarding. I am grateful to FJA for giving me the opportunity to continue pursuing what I love to do whilst also allowing me to grow as an educator, learning how to incorporate the Reggio Emilia approach into my own style of teaching.

At FJA, I hope to continue to inspire and touch the lives of children and families through purposeful play and music education.
