Back to Who We are

Biography of Betty Yau

I was born and educated in Scotland, U.K, and have now lived in Hong Kong for 20 years. My first career was in Scottish local government, where I was fortunate to work for the local city council in my hometown of Aberdeen, and support the workings of several Committees. As part of this role, I supported the administration of the local Children’s Panel, a unique feature of child focused care and protection in Scotland.

In 2003, I married and moved to Hong Kong just as SARS hit the territory. I re-trained as an English teacher, and spent five years teaching English to both children and adults at a language school. In 2005, my daughter was born - she is the inspiration behind my further study in Early Childhood Education. When she started nursery, I went back to work part-time and my second career path was established! I have worked at a number of international kindergartens in Hong Kong, supporting the establishment of three new schools and one language centre.

Through teaching playgroups for over 5 years, I witnessed how valuable the play experiences provided in the classroom are to children’s learning – play truly is a child’s work and every class a child attends should be fun and engaging, allowing the children to be creative, imaginative and happy.

I studied part-time to become a Kindergarten Principal and Registered Teacher in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Baptist University, and graduated with the highest GPA in my cohort, a real personal achievement. I am also a registered Child Care Supervisor, and gained my Masters degree in Educational Administration and Management with the University of Hong Kong. I enjoy supporting ECE student teachers through lecturing and fieldwork supervision for the Education University, as well as sharing with aspiring Principals at the Hong Kong Baptist University and Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education. In downtime, you will find me cooking, reading, spending time with family and friends, and going for the occasional hike on Lantau Island or to the Peak on Hong Kong Island.

It is a real honour to lead the Fairchild Kindergarten and Fairchild Junior Academy teams and I look forward to meeting you and your child. We are so fortunate to work in beautifully designed schools, and we warmly welcome your child to come and play, and learn with us as we nurture them through the precious early years.
